Exhibitions
The exhibition was opened on 13th August by the Mayor of Bury , Councillor Shaheena Haroon, who presented the awards. She was accompanied by her daughter Councillor Ayesha Arif, the Mayoress.
The major award winners were:
Millennium Award - Best in Show - Peter Jones for 'Black Cat'
David Swithenbank Foreign Painting Award - Anne Sugden for 'Venezuela from Space'
Mary Edyvean Flower Painting Award - Judith Church for 'Honeysuckle'
Bury Art Society Life Image Award - Gill Pollitt for 'Raven'
Tommy Valentine Landscape Award : Rita Jordan for 'Path by the River'
Peggy Hargreaves - 'Autumn Fruits'
Anna Hiley - 'Spring in Redisher'
Glynn Barnard - 'Birds Exotica'
Judith Church - 'Stakeout'
Judy Turner - 'Cow Parsley at Clifton'
Jill Roberts - 'Bury Church side door'
Additionally, this year, a new award was made, the Derek White Prize for Contemporary Art. The winner was Shyamal Sarkar for 'Crazy Monster'.
This prize was created in memory of Derek White using funds donated to the Society in his memory. Derek was not only an excellent artist but also a tireless committee member, serving as both Vice Chairman and Programme Secretary. Derek’s wife, Vicki, presented the trophy to the winner.
The winner of the Mary Shaw's People’s Prize was Catherine Shield whose picture 'Reclining Lady' has been chosen by the public as their favourite picture. Second place went to Gary Stockport for 'Harvest Mouse' and third place went to Judith Church for 'Your Majesty'.
